about zoom into engineering

The mission of the Hanford Engineers Week Committee is to encourage students to pursue careers in science and engineering.  All student outreach activities are performed by volunteers, and most presenters are engineers working in our community.

Over the years, tens of thousands of children have been positively impacted by the generosity of our volunteers.  Last year alone, with the help of nearly 100 volunteers, more than 4,800 local students experienced the field of engineering through classroom presentations and hands-on projects at 26 local schools.

The Elementary School “Zoom Into Engineering” program consists of a classroom visit by engineers to present an introduction to engineering and lead a hands-on activity that is appropriate for the grade level.  A specific activity for each grade level is provided to volunteer presenters, so as a student progresses through elementary school, the activity is different and more complex for that student each year.  Presentations are generally made to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Additionally, 3rd grade students have the chance to participate in a poster contest which challenges kids to independently think about what an engineer does. Past contest winners can be seen here.

Most classroom visits are held during Engineers Week which is the third week of February each year.
